Born in Gijón, Spain, Pelayo Cuéllar began his musical studies at the early age of four,
inspired by his family’s musical environment. His cello training, based in the Russian
tradition, was developed in Asturias under the guidance of renowned cellists associated
with the “Virtuosi of Moscow,” as well as in Maastricht, Netherlands, and Sion,
Switzerland.
This young cellist has been awarded several honors in both Spain and Belgium. He has
given recitals across Europe and performed as a soloist in countries such as Spain, the
Netherlands, Belgium, and the United States with orchestras from his region.
Dedicated to chamber music, Cuéllar has collaborated in various ensembles, including the
“Duo Northman,” with whom he won First Prize in the Consmupa – Fundación Caja Rural
de Asturias Chamber Music Competition, and the “Hamlet Trio,” with whom he performs
at the Orlando Festival in the Netherlands. He is also a member of the Baroque ensemble
‘L’Alcordanza,’ which includes musicians from the Symphony Orchestra of the
Principality of Asturias.
With significant orchestral experience, he has been working as a substitute cellist with the
Symphony Orchestra of the Principality of Asturias (OSPA) since 2022. He has also been
invited to perform as a tutti cellist with the Spanish National Orchestra, the Oviedo
Philharmonic Orchestra, the Romanian National Orchestra, and the Berlin
Kammerphilarmonie. He has performed as both principal and tutti cellist with youth
orchestras such as the Sinfonietta Orchestra of Lausanne/HEMU, the Spanish National
Youth Orchestra, and the Galician Youth Symphony Orchestra.
Cuéllar began his training at the Tchaikovsky Academy in his hometown of Gijón with
Professor Mikhail Milman and completed his studies at the Conservatory of the Principality
of Asturias with distinction and the highest honors. His main teachers and influences
include Alexander Osokin, Viguen Sarkissov, and Alexei Mijlin. He earned a Master’s in
Performance under Professor Alexander Chaushian at the Maastricht Conservatory and
began his Master of Music at the Haute École de Musique Sion with Professors Xavier
Phillips and Matthieu Lejeune. He has also benefited from the instruction of renowned
musicians such as Gustav Rivinius, Gregor Horsch, Claudio Bohorquez, Amit Peled, Asier
Polo, Gabriel Schwabe, and Enrico Bronzi.
