Etude No. 10, often referred to as the Appassionata and marked Allegro agitato molto, is imbued with a feverish fervor. Untitled, it bears only three asterisks — almost as a reminder of a tormented inner struggle.
The work explores multiple layers of sound, emphasizing mass and velocity: an anxious melody struggles to emerge through a dense network of virtuosic figurations, following Paganini’s approach of bringing the musical phrase to light within the most transcendental technical complexity, ultimately achieving a subtle yet precise poetic logic.
